EL108 - Preparing Students to Become Good Online Learners

This course will provide you with strategies and techniques to help prepare students for the online environment. To do so, you must also assess your strengths and weaknesses as an online instructor. As you help students assess their readiness for online learning, you are also preparing them for the expectations and realities of the online environment. By identifying students' strengths and weaknesses, you can provide guidance to help them achieve the learning outcomes. This course not only notes the necessary technical skills, it also discusses non-technical skills as well as techniques for successful learning and helping students develop their online persona.


Module 1: Online Persona

  • Recognize the importance of instructor self-analysis.
  • Recognize the importance of student self-analysis of online readiness.
  • Examine the role of motivation in the online classroom.
  • Discuss the importance of time management in the online classroom.
  • Examine strategies to provide assistance to students with special needs.

Module 2: Non-Technical Skills

  • Identify traits of good online citizenship.
  • Recognize the importance of good reading and writing skills.
  • Examine the role of student participation and engagement.
  • Discuss the role of Community of Practice in an online class.
  • Recognize the importance of effective communication.

Module 3: Technical Skills

  • Examine the role of asynchronous communication tools.
  • Examine the role of synchronous communication tools.
  • Identify necessary technology skills for student success.
  • Investigate ways to utilize the components of online learning space.
  • Discuss the role of social networking technical skills.

Module 4: Successful Online Learning Techniques

  • Examine the importance of planning and goal setting.
  • Describe netiquette rules for the online environment.
  • Develop techniques to help students create a time management tool kit.
  • Identify mistakes students should avoid in the online environment.
  • Examine the Principles of Learning.
