ED123 - Adaptive Learning in Education

This course will provide you with a basic overview of the background and history of an innovative instructional method called Adaptive Learning (AL). AL is growing in popularity and differs from traditional educational methods as it focuses on individualized, personalized instruction for everyone. With the rise of technology, AL has a definite place in education. This course discusses the background, importance, issues, attitude changes, implementation and future of AL. The advantages outweigh any disadvantages as AL can help create individualized instruction and increase student success.


Module 1: Importance of Adaptive Learning

  • Describe the background of the adaptive learning movement.
  • Define key historical characteristics and definitions of adaptive learning.
  • List three (3) models of adaptive learning.
  • Describe the impact of adaptive learning on education.
  • Reflect on the core elements of adaptive learning.

Module 2: Shifts and Changes in Education

  • Explain the institutional and instructor change of attitude in teaching when using adaptive learning.
  • Reflect on institutional academic standards when using adaptive learning.
  • Describe basic elements that can account for instructor limitations in adaptive learning methods.
  • List students’ misconceptions, resistance and responsibilities concerning adaptive learning.

Module 3: Implementation of Adaptive Learning

  • Explain steps to develop a plan for implementing adaptive learning techniques and recognize the barriers.
  • Identify 3-5 key players in the adaptive learning movement.
  • Describe technology tools used in adaptive learning.
  • List low-risk adaptive learning strategies.
  • Explain the types of assessment used in adaptive learning.

Module 4: Adaptive Learning Beyond Today

  • Describe the benefits of adaptive learning for the 21st century learner.
  • Analyze the differences between traditional learning and adaptive learning.
  • Explain the concept of the “gamification” as it pertains to adaptive learning.
  • Identify the basic ideals of adaptive learning for the masses.
