ED129 - Practical Applications for the Flipped Classroom

This course will provide you with an overview of various practical applications for the flipped classroom. The flipped classroom, also referred to as the inverted or reversed classroom, has been implemented in many classroom settings. This course will provide more information about engaging pedagogical models, just-in-time teaching, collaborative teaching and learning, and various components of the flipped classroom.


Module 1: Engaging Pedagogical Models

  • Explain how problem-based learning (PBL) can be effective in the flipped classroom.
  • Provide examples of how to use game-based learning (GBL) in the flipped classroom.
  • Describe inquiry-based learning (IBL) and how it is appropriate for the flipped classroom.
  • Explain the stages of the backward design approach and how that relates to teaching in the flipped classroom.

Module 2: Just-in-Time Teaching

  • Describe the steps to Just-In-Time (JIT) teaching and how it improves learner engagement.
  • Explain how time and place play a role in just-in-time teaching.
  • Provide examples of effective instructor immediacy behaviors that reduce the perceived distance between the learner and the instructor.
  • Describe various myths of the flipped classroom and clarify why they are myths.

Module 3: Collaborative Teaching and Learning

  • Describe the shared duties in collaborative teaching and learning.
  • Define mutual communication and explain its role in collaborative environments.
  • Define joint problem solving and explain its role in collaborative environments.
  • Explain why learner reflection and feedback is essential to collaboration.

Module 4: Various Components of the Flipped Classroom

  • Explain various ways to improve learner motivation in the flipped classroom.
  • Provide examples of formative and summative assessments for the flipped classroom.
  • Describe ways to overcome learner resistance to the flipped classroom.
  • Explain how to use learning analytics to work toward providing individualized learning for all learners
